The Last Meal
I just had my last meal at The Crafty Rooster on Third Avenue and I didn’t finish it. It is not because of the food. I like their food. It isn’t because of the décor. I like the CCU décor. It’s because I was raised to be polite and not overstay my welcome.
As I was partaking of my lunch, a very loud conversation ensued at the bar. Normally, I don’t pay attention to bar talk because it’s bar talk. But as this particular conversation
went on, it got progressively louder and effusive. Had it been a conversation between patrons, I would have still ignored it, but the subject at hand was being championed by Crafty Rooster employees.
What was this topic? How stupid “Horry County people” and “these idiots around here,” meaning natives, are. Granted, we’ve heard this for years and I normally consider the source. But this is an establishment I frequent a couple times a week and I’m a consistently good tipper. So, it was a surprise to turn and see that the manager was not disputing the assertions of the employees. I can only conclude that he agreed.
After several minutes of this, I went to the bar and requested my bill. I left my customary tip and left.
While I expect to hear this kind of inane drivel in Myrtle Beach, it was most disappointing to be subjected to it on 3rd Avenue in Conway. I do understand that Crafty Rooster’s is courting a college crowd in the evenings, but their lunch and summer traffic is mostly locals. Perhaps they would be advised to keep their opinions to themselves in the pre-evening hours.
Will my lost business impact this establishment? No. But will other eateries in Conway appreciate my extra business. Oh yes.
