CCU Study: We Need Rail Service

CCU study:  “critical” needs and opportunities for Horry County railroad service.

CONWAY SC: According to a CCU study, every dollar invested in a railroad system returns $3 to the local economy. Every job in the railroad industry supports an additional 4.5 jobs in businesses directly served by rail. At present, businesses in Horry County are missing out on these opportunities because of a lack of funding to upgrade the county’s railroad.  In fact, a brand new study of the almost moribund service in Horry County states that returning it to operational condition “is critical to the retention of current employers in Horry County.” That doesn’t count the effect of missed opportunities that upgrading and expanding the rail service would bring.

Conway Airport Open House

The Conway-Horry County Airport held an open house today. Vintage airplanes, experimental airplanes, single engine, multi-engines and even an ultralight aircraft were on display. The Conway Fire Department had a truck on display and there was even a Corvette show. Burgers, dogs and big motors, now that's a good time. The airport is located on Hwy 378 and pilot training is available.

Here are some pictures of the event. Enjoy!

Conway City Council Meeting 4.23.12

Monday night the Conway City Council meeting included awards, debates, public input, an executive session and a workshop. A full agenda indeed.

The highlights were the public input pertaining to the proposed smoking ban and the workshop discussions about vinyl siding and electronic signs. The public speakers were overwhelmingly in favor of banning smoking in governmental and community buildings, but leaving smoking in businesses up to the owners. This view seemed to be shared by smokers and non-smokers alike. Only two folks came forward in favor of the city dictating a smoking ban in private businesses and one of those based his support on, “they’ve done it in Ohio”.

City Council Meeting This Afternoon

The Conway City Council is meeting this afternoon at 5:30. The agenda is available down the page. After the regular meeting there will be a workshop session to discuss road projects, the smoking ban and other fun stuff. If you can't make it, don't worry. We will be there with our microphones and will have the audio available later in the week.

Is It Sunset for Sun Fun?

For a lot of us, there is a melancholy feeling of sadness, fond memories and hope that things might change in the future when it comes to hearing the news last week that the Sun Fun Festival has been cancelled for this season. The Chamber and the City of Myrtle Beach have only themselves to blame, instead of the people they say don't come anymore.

Having grown up in a big city and worked in the cores of some of the nation’s largest cities,  I have had plenty of experience enjoying all kinds of festivals…food, military, religious, Irish, Italian, Greek, Scottish, Gay Pride (I’m not gay), the fantastic Tampa Gasparilla Pirate Festival, the San Antonio Mexican Festival, and of course Mardi Gras…the list is endless.  And, what would Mardi Gras be without Bourbon Street?

Are Women Really a Distraction?

That’s what we were told in school. Especially when we paid too much attention to the cute girls in our class instead of our studies.  The same went for after school, when we gathered around them instead of going home and doing our homework.  C’est la vie, we all got through it and eventually wound up getting married. Although it appears that a majority of perfectly good and well-meaning American husbands have a tendency to still be attracted by pretty ladies.  It would not be prudent for me to comment on the woman’s side of this.

If you have been listening lately to President Barak Obama,

It’s All or Nothing in Upcoming Primaries

You’ll find 14 candidates, 9 Republican and 5 Democrats lined up to run in the June primary election for the new 7th Congressional District that has been established in Horry County and the Pee Dee.  On the other hand, the incumbents who hold many state legislative offices and many municipal elected offices are unopposed.

The reason for the lack of candidates at the state and local level can be attributed

Routine Stop?

On Monday late afternoon, Conway Police instituted a traffic stop on the corner of 3rd Avenue and Laurel Street.

When asked bout the incident, the officer on site simply stated that it was a "routine" stop. Hmmm...two patrol cars blocking the street and the subject vehicle's occupants on the sidewalk, call me cynical, but it doesn't exactly sound routine to me.

This is Conway-Interview with Brad Lofton

This time, guest host Brandon Sessions interviews Brad Lofton of the Myrtle Beach Economic Development Corp. Also in attendance is County Council Chairman, Tom Rice.

Listen in and get an idea of what the future holds for economic development in Horry County.
