While there are many violent crimes that strike fear in our hearts, it's the drunk driver who's most likely to seriously injure or kill someone close to us. 44% of all SC traffic fatalities in 2008 involved a drunk driver. That's up 1% from 2007 and 4% from 2006,...errhh, the trend is going the wrong way.
Those numbers consistently earn SC recognition as one of the worst three states for percentage of alcohol related traffic fatalities. With stats like that you may be wondering what you can do to help correct this worsening trend. I have an idea, call or email Conway Police Chief Reggie Gosnell and tell him to keep up the good work.
The S.C. Department of Public Safety just recognized Conway PD as Agency of the Year for it's DUI efforts. Conway Police Officer Josh Scott received the top award in the state, Officer of the Year for his 74 DUI arrests. Officer Chad Causey earned gold category recognition for his 60 DUI arrests. And Conway Police Officer Justin Strickland earned a bronze for his 20 DUI arrests. It's quite impressive to think that just 3 officers racked up 154 DUI arrests in our quiet little city, impressive enough to win us top honors. Not to mention that possibly the only reason you're able to read this article today is because the drunk driver headed your way was stopped first by one of these guys.
Best in the state...share your appreciation.
