More Rumors, Ramblings, and Otherwise Untrustworthy Information Regarding Downtown Conway 8-29-09
Downtown Conway SC merchants are happy to see September arrive. July and August were tough months for most of our businesses. During the mid-summer Myrtle Beach tourism is dominated by young families with little children who spend the majority of their time at the beach and it's numerous attractions. As those folks return home they are replaced by a different demographic who see Conway SC in a more desirable light. This new wave of tourism brings with it a much needed boost to our historic downtown district. Of course it doesn't hurt that the Christmas season is now within striking distance.
Create!Conway has the Art Walks on the 1st Saturdays scheduled for the next 12 months. This new non-profit organization has come out firing on all cylinders. In just two months they've developed a core of committed leaders, great business support, and a growing network of volunteers. Hints for future Create!Conway events: cigars, puppys, accordions, and jello. (OK, I admit one of those hints is a complete fabrication)
Good news and bad news. Bad, Painted Banana is closing it's doors. Good, Carla the owner is doing great with the wholesale and education piece of her business. She will now focus on these aspects of her business without the overhead of a retail location. She is also an extremely talented illustrator and has her eye on publishing. We'll miss her downtown, but we'll celebrate her success anyhow.
I've heard from two downtown businesses that feel their days are numbered. Out of respect for these friends and neighbors, I will not be mentioning names. It should, however, motivate us to act with great diligence in promoting Conway's Downtown District. I hope the various committees meeting under the City, Mainstreet, Chamber, and Create! realize their responsibilities and act soon enough to help these struggling business owners.
For all those folks that have requested an Ice Cream shop in Downtown Conway, it's coming.(more info soon)
Word from Amanda's is that they are having one of their best Summers in a very long time. A couple of their competitors at the beach have gone away, leaving them in a great position to build business in this tough economic environment. Good job ladies!
Construction at the Crafty Rooster is coming along, opening date seems fluid at this point. I peeked in the window today and it looks great. Black & Tan Onion Rings as an appetizer....sounds like a main entree to me.
Mexican food coming to Laurel? Does this mean margarita's and Cinco de Mayo celebrations during the Rivertown Music Festival? Please say it's true! Please!
Don't forget all the new shops that opened lately.
Shoplifters are hitting retailers, so watch those big purses. Shoppers don't take it personal but giant purses make them nervous. ParkSmith, Sassy Girl, and Gypsy and fighting back and have caught and prosecuted a few. I'll try to publish some of the legal options businesses have in dealing with these issues, in the coming weeks. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Jello? We love Jello! Especially Horry County State Bank (Green) jello. The children of Horry County love the opportunity to jump in jello...It brings back the kid in all of us..unless we've lost touch! Hope to see you at Riverfest!

Yes, we all love jello. I think it's great to eat and of course all children love to play in it. Why not do something that is this much fun for children more than once a year? Great idea Bridgette!

2009-09-07 16:00:08 | Concerned - Wher have all the Leaders Gone?
Is it me or is there a noticable lack of support from our so-called local "leaders" at downtown art and music events? Everyone had a such a great time at Saturday's event.I even bought some art for my house, had a great lunch and listened to some pretty darn good music while spending the day meeting the talented artists, musicians, and dedicated volunteers. I met people from as far away as Charleston, Columbia, Sunset Beach, New York, Pennsylvania and South Dakota, everywhere else enjoying our downtown, but...I saw not one Council Member, Chamber Board Member, City Official or Main Street Board Member! Are they too busy to support the volunteer efforts of the new downtown art group Create? I've heard them talk about supporting downtown, they meet about it, throw money at it, but can they get up, get out and support downtown? Apparently not! Very sad indeed. I even saw a report on TV-13 News at 11pm on Saturday night. Newsworthy but not "leader worthy?" Come on Conway Officials-Wake Up! Elections are coming.

The key ticket to downtown is #1 parking... I work in Conway and the most complained about issue everyone has is the downtown parking. #2 WAKE UP RETAILERS we are still in ressesion and when people dont have a JOB they cant pay for expensive things!!!Everyone needs to pull together and make 2 times a year or so and have typical priced sidewalk sales.... i guarantee if you do that people will not only come to Conway to shop but its will be great publicity as well. #3 When coming from the beach the "historic" Conway is hard to find WITHOUT SIGNS!!!!! No one knows we are even here or for that matter how to get here. Conway has the potential to be a warm and friendly and most of all,a beautiful city to visit. If we all come together and gather rational thoughts and invite any and all ideas and make it happen, it wont work sitting at your desk complaining our "leaders" are not present at some of the festivals and complaing that there isnt any business downtown.everyone who reads this say this to yourself everytime you have a complaint... "For every action, there is a reaction" -Newton's third law.

#1 Parking is an issue, add pedestrian safety to that as well.
#2 Sale - don't go there. Everyone getting together and running a sale at the same time and promoting it together in co-op ads would be great! Any takers can contact stan @ Bodega.
#3 City Council and Planning are making this a priority. I feel that progress is being made here.

2009-09-17 10:12:56 | Concerned Conwayite - We need
Dear Whiney, You may work downtown, but running your own business is quite different. Parking is an issue! There is nothing the merchants can do about parking except ask and keep asking(you say whine). The city needs to move forward and solve this problem. It is obvious what needs to be done and city funds are available to solve this problem! Yes signage is an issue...business owners have complained, whined, even demanded change.....guess what? After 10 years of struggling with archaic sign ordinances and a lack of empathy we are getting more signage! Pedestrian safety, another issue and making our city walkable, friendly and welcoming is a priority for business owners. Downtown merchants have asked, gone to meetings, signed forms, filled out questionnaires, talked with consultants, read the recommendations etc.Is City Council listening yet?? I'm not sure. Yes....we speak out, establish forums, have meetings, write articles, it's called freedom of speech! If we didn't do it, who would? Our livelihood is at stake. Our families depend on our businesses being successful. We do not have the luxury of sitting behind a desk and working 8 hours a day. We work 10 -12 hours a day, six days a week, meeting with vendors, stocking inventory, hiring and training employees, sometimes changing light bulbs, washing dishes and cleaning bathrooms...it's all part of the job. We are going to public meetings, meeting customers, taking classes and doing everything we can to learn how to stay in business and make it better. Is it too much to ask that our City support our efforts by attending downtown events, shopping in our stores and helping us solve our problems? If our issues could be solved with sidewalk sales we would have them every week!

I do understand that owning and working is 2 TOTALLY different things however, if you read closer to what i said is that we ALL need to come together and work as a TEAM NOT against one another. and i do ALOT more than "just sit behind a desk for 8 hours". And yes if it is called freedom of speech thats all I was doing, just giving my opinion. I dont want to see anyone go out of business and our town become "what was Conway" I too an concerned and it just seems like alot of the complainers are spinning thier wheels and getting upset and not going anywhere.

2009-09-17 11:48:21 | Concerned Conwayite - You Agree
It seems you agree with me. You want better parking, you want more signs, you want more for Conway and can see the potential of downtown. Complainers, spinning wheels? I don't think so. We all just want change. Now, not ten years from now

2009-09-17 12:30:18 | Concerned Local Merchant - I agree with some of this
I agree with the comment of pricing in Conway. I truely believe we are pricing ourselves out of the market. I have had a lot of people tell me they would love to shop here but they cannot affort prices that are in some instances 300 to 400% more then discount stores. I am not talking about the Wally Worlds here. You cannot get a sandwich, side and drink in Conway for lunch for under $5 it is usually $6 or more. Most of the other small towns have lunch specials at $3.50 to $4.95. Great breakfast sandwich in Loris, home made daily Kaiser Roll, Meat, Cheese and Egg for $1.49 Same in Conway at one store on a store bought bagle $4.50. Clothing prices compared to a Ross's or even Belk are outragious. Who wants to pay $75 for a tie. $300 for a pair of shoes, $95 for a pullover golf shirt. I dont mean to pick on anyone personally or any store individually but I am just using the above as examples. People will pay more for prompt, courtious service but only to a certain level. Lets review PLEASE!
